The Fragility of Freedom
In an increasing polarized political realm, where our civil liberties are vulnerable, our technology use isolates us, and our climate anxiety overwhelms us, it is the power of a single conversation, that can remind us we share common ground.
Freedom becomes fragile when we are dislocated from one another, relying on stereotype, gossip, and misinformation to create visions of another who we couldn’t possibly connect with, agree with, or even meet in the same room.
Our project held four conversations where people met and talked, proving that face-to-face dialogue has the power to break down stereotypes, disarm gossip, and reassert shared truth, reducing isolation and anxiety, and strengthening our ability to live more freely.
These conversations promote understanding and equality within our school, strengthen freedom in our province and nation, and remind people of the power of face-to-face dialogue to promote empathy, hope and forgiveness.
